A typical single cylinder horizontal engine, of which numerous would have been manufactured to drive a variety machinery in small workshops and factories etc.
It has a 6ins. bore and 9ins stroke with a flywheel diameter of 42ins. The engine speed is controlled by a belt driven Pickering governor.
This engine has been adapted by the museum to drive an overhead crank ram pump.
This pump was made by John Thom of Patricroft, Eccles, near Manchester and was installed in the Tong Dyeing Company works at Middleton Way near Rochdale.
Ram Diameter - 4¾ins. Stroke - 2ft.
It provided a source of water, which was used for bleaching and dyeing cotton cloth, brought in from the local mills.
In 1987 the pump and headgear was saved and subsequently refurbished by the apprentices of Rochdale Training Association.
It was then put on display in the Wheatsheaf Centre, Rochdale in 1990
